Mission & Vision

Gravitational lens of a galaxy cluster, captured by Hubble

We’re searching for what makes up 95 % of the universe.

ANU-X is developing the next generation of dark matter detection technology — at the frontier between engineering and cosmology.

The Mission

More than a quarter-century after its existence was confirmed, dark matter remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in physics. It holds galaxies together, shapes the large-scale structure of the cosmos, and yet emits no light whatsoever. ANU-X was founded to confront this mystery with the tools of engineering, not theory alone. We develop highly sensitive detectors, cryogenic technology, and signal-processing systems that search deep underground, shielded from cosmic radiation, for the faintest interactions imaginable. Our mission is to build the experimental infrastructure that enables the next discovery in fundamental physics — and to build it faster, more precisely, and more scalably than ever before. We believe the greatest scientific breakthroughs don’t emerge from university labs alone, but where excellent science meets industrial manufacturing discipline. That is exactly where ANU-X positions itself: as a bridge between fundamental research and the ability to build complex systems reliably, repeatably, and at scale.

Why Now

Rarely has the timing for an undertaking of this scale been as clear as it is today. Advances in cryogenics, low-noise sensors, and quantum metrology have reached detection thresholds that were unthinkable a decade ago. At the same time, industrial manufacturing of high-precision components has matured to the point where systems that once required years of lab development can now be scaled in months. This convergence of scientific maturity and industrial capability opens a window of opportunity we intend to seize before it closes again. Those who invest now aren’t building on the periphery of dark matter research — they’re building at its technological core.

“Every constellation we see is only the visible tip of a far greater, invisible scaffold.”

Our Origins

ANU-X is a company of DRW AG Holding, an industrial and energy group with decades of experience building complex, safety-critical facilities. This heritage is no coincidence: those who have been responsible for power plants, grid infrastructure, and large-scale industrial projects understand how to reliably carry ambitious technical systems from the first sketch through to productive operation. This foundation of operational excellence and long-term capital gives ANU-X the stability to work in a research field that demands patience, precision, and industrial substance.
